American Marketing Association - Las Vegas Chapter
December 2007

Let me be among the first to wish you a Happy Holiday Season! If you want to feel the spirit, be sure to attend the AMA Member Appreciation Holiday Luncheon on December 6 at the Las Vegas Country Club. This is a "benefits bonanza" to network, promote your business, have a great time and a good meal, and even take home some special gifts!

The members of the AMA Board have all pitched in to create 15 fabulous gift baskets for our raffle. In addition, they have put together a special gift package for every member attending, and will have smaller gifts for our non-member guests. You are encouraged to donate an item for our raffle and promote your business when your raffle winner is announced. All proceeds go toward the Scholarship Fund for the UNLV AMA Student Chapter.

The speaker at this event will be our members! We will talk a bit about the board management and solicit candidates for the upcoming elections. We will also get to know one another during introductions and networking activities.

Also, please note that this will be our last luncheon at the Las Vegas Country Club; we will be moving to our new location - Panevino - in January. We will pass out calendars to help you plan the first six months of the year. AMA - Las Vegas is on the move, and YOU are the one to benefit.

Happy Holidays!

up, up & away. Marketing News, 9/15/2007, Vol. 41 Issue 15, p22-25
The article examines the marketing strategy employed by Delta Air Lines to get more users of the airline's Web site to purchase their tickets online. Research showed many consumers were getting information from the site but buying tickets elsewhere. Optimost, a marketing firm that helps customers maximize Web site usage, redesigned the Delta site to make it far easier for customers to purchase tickets and to make it an obvious option. Researchers are told to pinpoint their goals and have specific definitions for each segment they wish to identify. Care should be taken that the data collected in the overall market survey provides enough information for accurate segmentation. Peggy Marlow is a fairly new member of AMA - Las Vegas, but is not a stranger to Las Vegas. She has lived in our wonderful city since 1991. Over the last several months, she has attended mixers and luncheons, assisted with setting up the marketing board, and helped distribute various informational materials. Peggy has also contributed to the door prize raffle and purchased a sponsorship. Always looking to volunteer, she plans on getting involved in the near future with our AMA chapter's committees.

Peggy has more than seventeen years of TRIO experience working in various educational programs. Currently, she serves as the Director for Marketing and Community Relations for UNLV's Center for Academic Enrichment and Outreach. She wears a second hat during the evening and on the weekends as a part-time in-home wine consultant for The Traveling Vineyard. If you enjoy wine, she can help you turn your living room into a tasting room!

She served in the United States Air Force as an active duty member from 1970 to 1979. In November 1979, she left active duty and joined the USAF Reserve Program until she retired in January 2003 with the rank of Senior Master Sergeant. Peggy received her Master's in Educational Leadership from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and a Bachelor's in Interdisciplinary Management from Southwest Texas State University. She participates throughout the year in several fun walks raising money for the American Heart Association, Arthritis Foundation, and Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. She also enjoys bowling and golfing.

November Luncheon

"Marketing Plan for Las Vegas" was the topic of AMA - Las Vegas' November luncheon. Rossi Ralenkotter, CEO of the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA), spoke about the present and future state of branding Las Vegas as a destination. As CEO of the LVCVA, Mr. Ralenkotter oversees the image of Las Vegas across all borders. The LVCVA also works to continue to provide "Adult Freedom" to visitors by inviting and retaining the biggest conventions and events around the globe. Topics covered in this insightful conversation included the growth of Las Vegas to 170,000 rooms by the end of the decade, strategies in maintaining one of the top five most recognizable brands in the world, and a presentation of previous, current, and future Las Vegas ads.

Our featured Annual Sponsor for this event was Frank Yoder from Advanced Information Systems and the Luncheon Sponsor was the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority. More than 120 people attended this event, making it one of the most successful AMA events of the year.

Hispanic Marketing Seminar

There weren't many words actually spoken in Spanish; however, our four expert speakers for the Hispanic Marketing Seminar delivered a wonderful workshop about the Latino culture and how to effectively market to this growing population.

AMA - Las Vegas and Regis University partnered to bring these four experts to Panevino on November 14. Derene Allen, Ray Garza, Chrysanthe Georges, and Diane Huth presented a wide range of useful information for our attendees - from the demographics and distinctions across the various Hispanic population groups to the unique style of marketing approach needed to reach this demographic and provide the best return on investment for each marketer's respective product.

The presentation format allowed each presenter to deliver their highlights, and breakout sessions facilitated an opportunity for personal dialogue. In addition, everyone walked away with a great package of data for additional reference.

Don't miss out - our NEXT AMA luncheon is Thursday, December 6!
